The 18th season of the Atlantic Classical Orchestra's residency at VBMA kicks off this Sunday January 18 at 3:00 PM, and if you know, you know: arrive early, wander the galleries (admission included), then settle into the Leonhardt Auditorium.
This Sunday's program, "Music and Nation," features Joseph Haydn's string quartets — of which he wrote dozens and essentially defined the form — alongside Dvořák's G Major Quintet. The Leonhardt's intimate setting puts ACO musicians just feet from the audience, the way these 18th-century works were meant to be heard.
Two more concerts follow: February 15 brings Mozart's Oboe Quartet, written to showcase his virtuoso friend Friedrich Ramm and the newest, most advanced oboe of the era, paired with Bach's Goldberg Variations in an arrangement for string trio.
March 15 closes the series with Duo Beaux Arts performing piano duets — Schubert's Fantasy in F Minor, selections from Ravel's Mother Goose Suite, Chabrier's España, and a transcription of Strauss's Blue Danube Waltz.
Single tickets are $35-$50 (students $5), series passes $90-$105. All tickets include museum admission. For more information, click here.
