Vero Beach has never had a shortage of things to do. What it has lacked, especially for young families, is a reliable way in.

For years, the social fabric here has functioned on familiarity. If you grew up here or arrived with connections, you’re set. If you didn’t, it can take far longer than expected to find your footing. It often shapes who stays, who leaves, and who ever fully participates in the life of the community.

Mom Walk is changing that.

When Sheila Hunter moved from California in 2015, she encountered a version of Vero that was welcoming on the surface but harder to access in practice. During COVID, home with a newborn, she borrowed a simple idea from an Orange County mom group: Gather mothers and start walking. With Julie Weiss, a former teacher who had stepped away from the classroom to raise her son, that idea gained structure and momentum.

What they built fills a need that had gone largely unaddressed.

And now there's a way for women, many of them new to Vero and Indian River County, many of them not, to meet consistently, without formality or friction. From Mommy & Me yoga at Painted Sky Farms to pop-ups, classes, and casual meetups, Mom Walk creates a rhythm of connection that didn’t previously exist at this scale.

“Motherhood is not meant to be done alone,” Sheila says. In Vero, that sentiment carries broader implications. Communities can't sustain themselves on amenities alone. They depend on relationships.

When people find connection, they engage. They show up to arts and cultural events, enroll in programs, support local businesses, and invest their time and energy locally. Without that entry point, even the most well-resourced communities risk feeling distant or static. Mom Walk has created that entry point.

There are no dues, no expectations, no barriers to entry. Just an open invitation to participate, and a structure that makes it easy to return.

Mom Walk is moving toward nonprofit status, expanding its programming, and opening formal sponsorship opportunities for local businesses who want to be part of it.
