Here's a number that should stop you in your tracks. Indian River County is home to more than 170,000 people. Of those, 118,221 were registered to vote in the 2024 primary. Only 40,498 actually did, a turnout of just 34.26%.
The dates are genuinely confusing. We think of Election Day in November, but it's August 18 that counts.
The dates shift, they don't line up with the ones you remember from the last big election, and life gets busy.
But it also means a very small slice of the county ends up deciding things for you and
everyone else.
This year there's a real reason to change that. One of the two open seats on the ballot -- District 2 -- has been held by the same person, Joe Flescher, for 20 years and there are several new faces vying for the position.

August 18: Primary Election Day, polls open 7 AM–7 PM
