21st Amendment Distillery marked its two-year anniversary Sunday night with a celebration that proved how a business milestone can become a force for good—and how a community will not allow one of its heroes to be forgotten.

The evening honored Robert Thompson, a Vietnam veteran and double Purple Heart recipient whose life unraveled after the loss of his wife and three sons in the same year.

The grief and stress cost him his home, leaving him to live in the woods while relying on oxygen to survive.

Veterans Service Officer Michelle Auton and Indian River County Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Burke found Robert living outdoors and brought him to a hotel for safety while they pursued long-term options. Michelle contacted the Ardie Copas State Veterans Nursing Home, but they declined his admission because he required 8 liters of oxygen daily—beyond their 5-liter maximum.

When Jeff Palleschi, owner of 21st Amendment Distillery, and Tony Young, retired Army officer, former Mayor, and president of the MOAA IRC chapter, learned of Robert’s plight, they quickly mobilized support. The Treasure Coast Homeless Services Council secured housing funds, while MOAA, local veteran groups, and private donors joined in. The 21st Amendment anniversary fundraiser adds critical resources to help Robert rebuild.

The story took an extraordinary turn during a manicure appointment.

MOAA Board member Bethany Fortunato, who was preparing to question State Representatives Erin Grall and Robbie Brackett about the State run veterans’ home policies, received a call from Michelle updating her on Robert’s case.

Sitting across the table, nail technician Elise overheard and asked the man’s name—only to realize that the veteran in need was her grandfather!!!

That “God moment” set the stage for an emotional reunion. At the celebration, Robert was joined by his step-daughter Sandie Smith, granddaughters Elise and Kathleen, and his great-grandson Elijah.

Musician Jae Wilder performed without charge, underscoring the night’s spirit of service.

Palleschi reminded guests that “service before self” is both the distillery’s motto and its mission. And as Robert entered 21st Amendment to applause and a salute by over 100 guests, it was hard to find a dry eye in the place.
