Saved, Not Paved: Nature Wins the Day!

Look what just got saved!
A 1.6-acre stretch along the St. Sebastian River's South Prong, the last privately zoned link standing between a future trailhead off County Route 512 and conservation land the City of Sebastian already protects, is preserved for good instead of paved over. We got lucky here.
That's thanks to the Indian River Land Trust, which just made one of its most strategic buys ever to make it happen. The parcel was zoned for houses right up until this past week. Now, it closes a chapter that's been open since 2004, when a continuous greenway along the St. Sebastian River, the Lagoon's only natural tributary, was first proposed.
Rose West, the Land Trust's Director of Land Acquisition, tracked this parcel down and drove the deal to the finish line. Ken Grudens, IRLT's longtime Executive Director, has spent years steering the organization toward exactly this kind of patient, high-leverage land buy, the ones that don't make headlines until suddenly they're the whole reason a 22-year vision finally connects.
This is IRLT's third acquisition along this exact corridor in three years, following a 36-acre property in 2023 and a 20-acre one in 2025. Three deals, one continuous greenway, and counting.
