McKee Goes Wild

The wild have officially come out to play at McKee. A baby hippo, a giraffe, a cheetah, an elephant, a zebra, a bear, an arctic fox and a giant tortoise staked their positions along the Garden's paths this past Saturday, and you should go have a look. This weekend its only $5, but if you can't make it, relax, because they plan on sticking around through December 2027.
If you read our previous article, you know Gillie & Marc Schattner, the internationally acclaimed British-Australian couple who have planted bronze animals in more than 250 cities and made public sculpture into a powerful force for wildlife advocacy. Given McKee was itself shuttered and almost lost to developers before it was rescued, this lesson hits quite close to home.
McKee is also bringing plenty of new programming you won't want to miss. On two Friday evenings this fall, October 23 with the Kat Woods Trio and November 13 with Rhythm & Sky, you can bring a lawn chair, get dinner from the Café and hear live music in the jungle for $10, or for free if you're a member. The fall classes are worth a look too, and they're all listed here.
And it turns out McKee's new arrivals are such a hit, this year’s Jungle Lights is themed after them. Jungle Lights: Return of the Wild opens November 29, runs 31 nights, and tickets go on sale today here.
