Local Tributes and 9/11 Reflections

Indian River State College students gathered for the annual 9/11 Tower Run where over 100 participants climbed the Fire Academy's seven-story tower 16 times—matching the height firefighters climbed on September 11th. Several students went further, completing 32 climbs to represent both the ascent and descent that 343 firefighters never completed.

The memorial was part of a week of 9/11 commemorations and tributes, which also included 428 runners participating in the Tunnel to Towers 5K at Riverside Park. The race honored those lost on September 11, 2001, while supporting the foundation's mission to honor fallen first responders and military members. Local sponsors included George E. Warren Corporation, Denise and Joe Corr, Linus Cadillac Buick GNC, and Natalie's Orange Juice, among others.

First responders from across Indian River County also gathered at the fairgrounds for a solemn memorial ceremony, bringing together law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency medical services. Firefighter Anthony Montella, a since-retired NYC firefighter assigned to Ladder 2 in Mid-town Manhattan, was the keynote speaker.

Sheriff Eric Flowers announced plans for a special commemoration next year for the 25th anniversary.
