McKee Botanical Garden's Titan Arum, which Vero christened Princess Pungent, never unfurled her spathe, and never released the legendary rotting-garbage reek that makes this plant one of nature's most theatrical performers. She produced pollen instead, marking the end of her lifecycle on her own terms.
But in the weeks leading up to that anticlimax, Princess Pungent became arguably the most watched, most photographed, most rooted-for plant in McKee's recent memory.
Thousands of visitors tracked her daily progress. People who had never given a houseplant a second thought were refreshing McKee's Instagram like it was election night. All for a flower that never opened.
That's the Princess Pungent effect. She had other plans, and Vero Beach showed up anyway.
Titan Arums spend years, sometimes a full decade, building energy underground before they even consider performing. There are no guarantees. There never were. What McKee gave this community was something rarer than a bloom: a shared moment of genuine anticipation, curiosity, and collective wonder about something growing right in our own backyard.
As McKee puts it: "It's not goodbye. It's smell ya later!"
