It took seven years, but the Sawbones (that’s the doctors) finally got their win—and they made sure everyone knew it. In the 14th annual Sawbones vs. Jawbones Charity Softball Game, held at Holman Stadium and presented by Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital, the medical team broke their losing streak with a long-overdue victory over the lawyers.
Led by Dr. Jeff Livingston of Vero ENT Associates, the Sawbones came out looking like they meant business—probably because they did. After watching the Jawbones rack up wins year after year, the docs were clearly done playing nice. Across the diamond, attorney Steven R. Wilson of Rossway Swan Tierney Barry & Oliver, P.L., tried to keep the Jawbones in the game, but this time, the legal arguments just didn’t hold up.The evening, emceed by the ever-energetic Jeff Petersen, was full of community spirit and just enough sportsmanship to keep it wholesome.
Before the main event, the United Way Little League Cup got things rolling, followed by booths and activities from United Way partners like Gifford Youth Achievement Center, Indian River County Healthy Start Coalition, Treasure Coast Homeless Services Council, The Salvation Army, Indian River Habitat for Humanity, Youth Guidance, and United Against Poverty. Proceeds from the night benefited United Way of Indian River County and its efforts to boost health, education, and financial stability across the community.
Still, if you were keeping score, this one was all about the bragging rights. And this time, the doctors finally wrote the lawyers a prescription for defeat.
Same time next year—though something tells us the Jawbones are already planning their appeal. In the meantime, don't miss Hoses vs. Handcuffs this Saturday, May 31st at 9 a.m., when firefighters and Sheriff's deputies will face off for a three game showdown to celebrate the Indian River County Centennial.
