Couldn’t Be There? Relive McKee’s Magical Weekend Here

If you missed the First Annual Rare & Exotic Orchid Exhibition & Sale at McKee Botanical Garden, watch the video below—This annual show is sure to become one of the Treasure Coast's most anticipated signature events.

Attendees enjoyed insightful presentations by distinguished speakers, including plantsman and author Robbie Honey, who journeyed from South Africa, and Dr. Martin R. Motes, Florida’s leading Vanda orchid authority.

Did you know that for safekeeping from the bombing during World War II, Britain sent its rarest and most delicate orchids to Arthur McKee, who had invented the first air-conditioned greenhouse? This was just one of many legacy stories of orchids and their history recounted.

Top growers such as Krull-Smith, Odom’s Orchids, Ritter Tropic 1, Quest Orchids, and Springwater Orchids provided dazzling displays, raising the standard for orchid shows on the Treasure Coast and paving the way for the American Orchid Society, who have announced they will be on hand to judge next year’s exhibition!

Prices were unbeatable and all the growers were personable and eager to share growing tips. By the way, the often-recommended two ice cubes in the orchid planter is NOT the way to go. Using ice cubes can shock roots and lead to poor growth over time. The best method is to watch root color and when roots change from a rich green to a silvery or gray color, it's time to submerge the orchid's pot in room temperature water for about 15-20 minutes. Then let it drain fully. This hydrates roots evenly without risking rot or cold damage.
