Some of the best news in Indian River County this year arrives in the form of a spreadsheet.

United Way of Indian River County has just finished handing out $1,459,499 in grants to 34 local nonprofits, funding 46 programs for the year ahead.

Because of this funding, 1,002 people will have access to mental health screenings. Nearly 18,000 will have a reliable source of food. Almost 400 young children will have seats in early learning classrooms. 37 people increased their wages this year through United Against Poverty's Success Training for Employment Program, known locally as STEP, one of the many programs this funding keeps running.

The recipient list reads like a roster of organizations at the core of how Indian River County functions: SafeSpace, Hibiscus Children's Center, the Mental Health Association, Treasure Coast Food Bank, the Veterans Council, Habitat for Humanity.

Meredith Egan, the organization's CEO, said in a press release: "Behind every allocation is a local family, child, senior, or individual whose life may be changed because help is available when they need it."
