Open Mic, Ancient Tradition: Stand-Up Comedy at Riverside Theatre

ree

Many of the first comedians—jesters and comic actors in Renaissance Europe—weren't just looking for applause. They played a riskier game, using humor to slice through pretense and expose uncomfortable truths about those in power. Saying the wrong thing could mean serious consequences, but that danger is precisely what made people listen. These performers dragged society's realities into the open, using laughter as both shield and spotlight.

This DNA of danger flows directly through modern stand-up comedy. Rather than sidestepping big topics, stand-up grabs them head-on, delivering social commentary that hits and sticks. The comic stands alone, carrying forward centuries of performers who chose courage over safety. At Riverside Theatre's Comedy Zone, this fearless tradition continues, regularly hosting award-winning comics who have toured the nation over.

This week, headliner Paul Farahvar delights audiences with his self-deprecating dry humor, centered on being the single son of disappointed Middle Eastern parents. Stephen Henry, a Tampa native who reached the semifinals of Florida's Funniest in 2019 and was a finalist twice at McCurdy's Stand Up competition, will serve as the feature act.
