Matt Tanner leads with purpose and delivers with results. Since stepping into his role as Executive Director of United Against Poverty in 2020, Tanner has reshaped what impact looks like in Indian River County. His approach is focused: equip people with the tools to build better lives, and back it up with systems that work.
Under his leadership, UP’s programs have expanded dramatically—from workforce training that placed over 100 people into living-wage jobs last year, to a grocery program that saved families more than $16 million in food costs. He introduced bold initiatives like the “Going UP” bus, bringing job training directly to communities that need it most. Tanner’s work isn’t about temporary relief—it’s about long-term economic mobility. It’s about changing the odds.
Which brings us to Burgers & Brews—a cornerstone community event that, under Tanner’s direction, has become a major economic driver in its own right. In just ten years, the event has raised more than $500,000, directly supporting UP’s programs and fueling community-wide progress. It’s one of the most anticipated days of the year in Vero Beach—a celebration of good food, craft beer and shared purpose.
You’ll find Matt there—moving quietly through the crowd – take a moment to say hello!
