Just over two weeks ago, Indian River State College marked its 100,000th credential conferred since its founding, a milestone in its own right, but the real story lies in the graduates the school has produced, one of whom addressed this year’s graduating class.
Taylor Gerring graduated from The River in 2003 with an associate's degree in business. A decade later, he was in Switzerland at a table with seven other people, and together they co-founded Ethereum.
Most people have heard of Bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general. Ethereum is different and, in many ways, larger. While Bitcoin is primarily a digital store of value, Ethereum operates as the digital infrastructure of web3, a new kind of internet where people can transact, build, and make agreements without routing everything through a bank, a platform, or a tech giant taking a cut.
The ecosystem Ethereum underpins is now valued in the hundreds of billions and growing more mainstream every day.
Gerring told the 1,500 graduates in front of him to "jump in with both feet and celebrate the wins."
He would know. He started exactly where they did.
