After two sold-out Classic Movie Nights, Main Street is bringing back the movie night series with Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), transporting you back to Hollywood’s golden age with unforgettable musical numbers, sharp comedy and -- champagne! Tickets are $12.00; proceeds benefit Main Street Vero Beach.
Gentlemen Prefer Blondes follows showgirls Lorelei Lee (Marilyn Monroe) and Dorothy Shaw (Jane Russell) on a trip to Paris—Lorelei confidently hunting for a wealthy husband with charm and wit, while Dorothy seeks fun and adventure, catching the eye of the entire men’s Olympic team.
Featuring iconic songs like “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” sharp humor, and memorable performances, this film blends comedy and music with themes of love, wealth, and female empowerment, making it a timeless classic that continues to captivate audiences today.
What you might not know is that their off-screen friendship was just as strong as their chemistry on screen. Jane Russell supported Marilyn Monroe through her stage fright between takes. And that iconic pink gown Monroe wore in “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” was so heavily beaded and weighted with sequins and rhinestones that Monroe had to carefully control every step and movement. The dress reportedly weighed around 20 pounds, making it difficult to walk and dance in, which makes Monroe’s flawless and captivating performance even more impressive.
Beyond the sparkle, these two women are funny, clever, and determined. The witty script still hits all its marks, even 70 years later. With stunning Technicolor and costumes that continue to inspire today, this is classic Hollywood at its best.
Main Street’s Morgen Reynolds, has helped make these movie nights a favorite tradition. After two sold-out events, tickets for this crowd favorite will go fast—so be sure to get yours early and join the fun.
Come experience great film, good company, and a night out in Vero Beach you won’t forget.
