Empty the Shelters: The Case for Skipping the Breeder

If you've been contemplating getting a pet, the next two weeks are the best time to take action!

The Humane Society of Vero Beach is running reduced adoption fees through May 17 as part of the national Empty the Shelters campaign organized by the BISSELL Pet Foundation. Every pet leaves vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed or neutered, ready to move into its new forever home.

If you've never adopted a rescue before, there's a strong argument for skipping the breeder entirely. In many cases, shelter animals are already house-trained. More importantly, adoption offers greater flexibility in choosing your perfect match in terms of size, energy, age, and personality, giving you the certainty of taking home a pet that actually fits your lifestyle rather than hoping one grows into it.

See below some photos of just a few of the animals up for adoption.

The shelter is located at 6230 77th Street, open weekdays 11 to 6 and weekends 11 to 5 through May 17. Find your perfect match at hsvb.org.
