Countdown, Celebrate, Ball Drop—Be There for the Centennial Grand Finale!
By Michelle Wagner, Genealogy Librarian, Indian River County Library Chairperson, Indian River County Centennial

This summer marks an incredible milestone for our community—Indian River County’s 100th anniversary, officially celebrated on June 29, 2025. As chairperson of the centennial and a lifelong student of our local history, I invite you to join us for the grand finale of events that honor our roots, showcase our growth, and bring neighbors together.
A Brief History: The Founding of Indian River County
Indian River County officially came into being on June 29, 1925, but its roots lie in the frustrations of everyday life under St. Lucie County’s notorious blue laws. Back then, even something as innocent as buying an ice cream soda or catching a Sunday movie was forbidden. For a community craving simple pleasures and a little freedom, these restrictions were the last straw. Out of this desire for a life less regulated—and a Sunday at the movies—Indian River County was born.
Centennial Events: Celebrate With Us!
Friday, June 27, 2025 – Downtown Friday & Parade Combo (6–10 pm) Experience the energy of Main Street Vero Beach’s Downtown Friday, now supercharged with centennial excitement! Enjoy local vendors, delicious food, and live music. At 7 pm, our centennial parade will roll down 14th Avenue, featuring creative floats, a flyover by the Indian River County Sheriff’s helicopter, antique cars, and more. After the parade, explore fascinating displays—including a replica 1715 Ship, historical Road & Bridge equipment, and more antique vehicles. Young explorers can complete a scavenger hunt for a special prize (first 200 finishers), with details at the Main Street Vero Beach tent. The evening wraps up with the highly anticipated ball drop at 9 pm, followed by continued music with the Mighty Flea Circus until 10 pm. Parking is not available on the street. It is recommended to park at the courthouse garage or main library.
Sunday, June 29, 2025 – History Fair (2–5 pm, Heritage Center) Discover the rich resources and organizations that make our community unique. This free event features historical exhibits, local vendors (including the Indian River County Chamber of Commerce and Winter Beach Historical Society and Coastal Connections), and plenty of giveaways. It’s a fun and educational afternoon for all ages!
Monday, June 30, 2025 – Time Capsule Dedication (10–11:30 am, County Administration Flagpole) Join us as we dedicate a time capsule filled with artifacts and memories from 1925-2025, to be opened by future generations. This brief ceremony is a unique way to preserve our centennial celebration and connect today’s community with those who will call Indian River County home in the years ahead.
Building Community Connections
The centennial is a chance to reflect on the vision that shaped Indian River County, celebrate our shared achievements, and strengthen the bonds that make this place home.
