A Once-In-A-Century Opportunity -- Ultra-Rare Stradivarius Violin Stops in Vero Beach Before Heading to Auction

Updated: Sep 3

ree

An extraordinarily rare Antonio Stradivarius violin—one of fewer than 600 in existence!—will make a special appearance in Vero Beach on September 9 before heading to auction in Palm Beach at the end of the month. Made possible by the Gifford Academy for Performing Arts.

Crafted by legendary Italian luthier Antonio Stradivari in the 17th century, these instruments are celebrated for their unparalleled sound and craftsmanship and are considered among the finest in the world.

Rarity and Historical Significance

Stradivarius violins represent the pinnacle of stringed instrument making and are renowned for their unique sound—often attributed to Stradivari’s use of dense alpine spruce, custom mineral varnishes, and precise construction techniques. Some researchers believe special chemical treatments, such as the use of Borax to protect against woodworms, contributed to their legendary resonance and longevity. Notable features like narrow f-holes and exacting contours add to their mystique and the centuries-old mystery behind their signature tone.

Two Opportunities for Community Members

Before returning to private hands, this violin—once owned by Professor McKay of Harvard University and loaned to Juilliard—will be featured in a special fundraising event hosted by the Gifford Academy for Performing Arts.

Two opportunities await the public on Tuesday, September 9 at the Community Church of Vero Beach:

1. A ticketed private lecture and reception at 4:00 PM

(limited seating, $100, includes hors d’oeuvres)

2. A public sanctuary presentation at 6:00 PM ($20 general admission, free for students).

Gifford Academy’s New Chapter

The event marks a significant moment for the Gifford Academy for Performing Arts, which has recently rebranded from the Gifford Youth Orchestra. The Academy’s broader mission now encompasses not just music, but drama, dance, and expanded arts education opportunities for local youth and the entire community.

Unique Facts

Stradivarius violins are famed for their rare floated alpine wood, historical mineral enhancements in their varnish, and unrivaled attention to detail—factors that have defied exact duplication and fueled research for centuries. Each surviving violin embodies centuries of artistry and mystery, making public exhibitions like this one truly exceptional.

This event will provide Vero Beach with a once-in-a-generation look at a historic and near-mythical musical treasure, all thanks to the Gifford Academy for Performing Arts’ ongoing commitment to transformational arts education and community enrichment.
